No bonus points for calling this one, but it looks like Atom support has returned to Mac OS X 10.6.2 — less than two weeks after it was unceremoniously removed to the dismay of hackintoshers. Of course, this new “fix” doesn’t come courtesy of Apple, and it does take the art of hackintoshing to some risky new levels. Developed by a member of the InsanelyMac forum, the hack is actually a full-on replacement kernel for OS X, which means it will require a good bit of fine tuning to get installed, and some considerable faith in the developer on your part. It does seem like quite a few trailblazers are happy with it, however, so hit up the links below if you’re ready to take the plunge.

Grand Central Dispatch may not exactly be a household name to the average Apple user, but it’s certainly a hot topic among developers, who may know it better as “libdispatch,” and are no doubt thrilled that Apple has now made the whole thing open source. Among other things, that means developers are now able to take full advantage of multi-core processors in Snow Leopard, which obviously has some fairly big implications for applications as soon as those developers are able to get a handle on things. Know what you’re doing? Just like to get in over your head? Then you can find the complete source code and other necessary information at the read link below.

While you wait for that order to ship, Apple wants you to know that Snow Leopard’s Finder is more responsive, Mail loads messages twice as fast, Time Machine will complete initial backups 80 percent faster, and a 64-bit version of Safari 4 is 50 percent faster than its predecessors. There’s even QuickTime X with a redesigned player that lets users view, record, trim and share video. Of course, this release also includes Grand Central Dispatch, a new way for devs to take advantage of multi-core processors as well as OpenCL support to accelerate apps with the help of that idling graphics processor. Oh, and out of the box support for Microsoft Exchange too. All in all, a worthy update, especially for the price.

It’s been nary a fortnight since Amazon started taking pre-orders for Snow Leopard and now, according to the kids at Mac4Ever, a handful of “reliable sources” (their words, not ours) have stepped forward to proclaim that the OS has gone golden, meaning that this final iteration (reported as build 10A432, for those of you keeping track) is the one that will hit the stores in September. Additionally, MacRumors reports that in the time since this little bomb dropped benchmarks for the build have popped up — and quickly disappeared — at the Geekbench database. Make of all this what you will, dear readers.

Apple slated Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) for a September launch at a $29 price point when they announced it in detail at WWDC earlier this year. Amazon is generally the first 3rd party retail store to have a product for sale. This does not change with Apple, as their next iteration of Mac OS X is now available for pre-order at Amazon.

The prices have gone unchanged: Snow Leopard will retail for $29 on its own, $49 as a 5-user family pack, $499 for the server version, $169 for the Mac Box Set (Snow Leopard, iLife 09 and iWork 09) and $229 for the 5-user Mac Box Set.

Snow Leopard will release “sometime in September,” so for those who cannot spare a moment, the time is nigh for you to pre-order. However, something tells me Apple can meet the demand of OS X, and that a pre-order may not be necessary.

Snow Leopard. Nothing new about the date and price from what we heard at WWDC this year, it’s still listed for September at $29. Five-user family pack is $49, Server version is $499, and you can bundle a single or five-user pack with iWork and iLife for $169 and $229, respectively. We don’t anticipate the OS being in short supply come launch, but if you need a peace of mind and Snow Leopard on day one, pull out your credit card and direct your browser Amazon’s way.

Your fancy new iPhone OS 3.0 starting to look a bit long in the tooth? Heads up, Apple’s now sending out the beta OS 3.1 and its SDK to the developer community to finagle with. We’re still looking to see what’s been changed here, so for now, if you’re someone who needs the Latest and Greatest and happens to have the right access, download away!

Update: Still tinkering, but we’ve seen a new “Save a Copy” option for 3G S video editing that lets you retain the original film while saving an edited clip (picture after the break, thanks Kevin), as well as some reports of MMS being activated, but it seems to stall before actually being sent out over AT&T’s network.
