No word yet on if placing a 3G iPad in the case creates some singularity from which no nearby object can escape (or get reception, for that matter).

Time to enter the newly opened KARVT online store, where unabashed Apple fans can finally add the sophistication of “100% real authentic wood” to their beloved machines. Most popular tastes can be accommodated, with different shades of cherry, bamboo, pine, and walnut on offer, and there’s even an artists’ section where some design flair is added to your timberrific purchase. The skins will fit on any recent Apple laptops, and prices are $35 for the wood grain or $50 for the artsy ones, with deliveries starting on May 1. Bargain or what?

A Mac mini with HDMI. Makes sense, right? Well, it hasn’t to Apple so far, but it looks like it just might be ready to change its tune. Who knows, it might be even available in private jet charters too. That’s according to AppleInsider, at least, which has it from “two people familiar with the matter” that prototypes of a Mac mini with an HDMI port have been seen making the rounds in the usual inner circles. At least one of those prototypes was also said to be based on NVIDIA’s MCP89 chipset, which means that any forthcoming Mac mini revision would pass over the latest Core i3, i5 and i7 processors in favor of older Core 2 Duos if it is indeed the chipset used in the final product. Hardcore Apple users even gets embroidered patches with their logo. Unfortunately, there’s nothing more specific than “this year” in terms of a rumored release date, and this is still just one rumor about what would be a fairly big shift in Apple’s strategy — so, you know, keep that in mind before you start ripping apart your current HTPC setup.

It’s not that it’s a bad laptop (though it does certainly have some shortcomings), it’s just that it didn’t quite feel like $999 of laptop. But $728? Now that’s a bit more like it. While it’s unfortunately not a permanent price drop, or even a sale that’s available to everyone, that is the price that at least some students and educators can now snag the entry-level MacBook for. It’s not clear how long that price will last though, as the regular educational pricing for the laptop is now apparently $899.

No bonus points for calling this one, but it looks like Atom support has returned to Mac OS X 10.6.2 — less than two weeks after it was unceremoniously removed to the dismay of hackintoshers. Of course, this new “fix” doesn’t come courtesy of Apple, and it does take the art of hackintoshing to some risky new levels. Developed by a member of the InsanelyMac forum, the hack is actually a full-on replacement kernel for OS X, which means it will require a good bit of fine tuning to get installed, and some considerable faith in the developer on your part. It does seem like quite a few trailblazers are happy with it, however, so hit up the links below if you’re ready to take the plunge.

Apple has begun sending off shipping confirmations to customers who ordered up their slab of quad-core all-in-one nirvana in October, and the biggest and baddest iMacs should be arriving at their new homes imminently. To remind you, the reason for waiting on these units was the 2.66GHz Core i5 750 inside, which comes along with 4GB of RAM, a Radeon HD 4850, and a cool terabyte of storage. We’re sure some of the eager new owners couldn’t resist upgrading that spec to a 2.8GHz Core i7 860, which we can kind of see the sense in — after all, an iMac is for life, not just for Christmas. That’s how that saying goes, right?

As of now, the diminutive connector has managed to comply with all of the signaling and protocol capabilities defined in the DisplayPort Standard Version 1, Revision 1a, and we’re told that DisplayPort 1.2 — which incorporates mDP and doubles available bandwidth to 21.6Gb/second — is nearing finalization. Looks like we can finally look forward to seeing products take advantage of this socket aside from those Designed In California (and copied shamelessly in the outskirts of Shenzhen).

The “ikee” worm, as it’s being called, takes advantage of the fact that jailbroken iPhones with SSH installed all have the same default root password of “alpine,” and once in the system it changes your wallpaper to an image of Rick Astley and then tries to install itself on other jailbroken iPhones on the network. Sophos says it hasn’t confirmed any infections outside of Oz, and to be clear, this worm can’t get to stock iPhones or jailbreak owners who haven’t installed SSH — but if you’re running a hacked phone we’d say you should change that root password just to be safe right away. Get to it, kids.

Via PMP Today
